Congress sends copy of Constitution to PM Modi, says read it when you get time from dividing nation

NEW DELHI: On the occasion of the 71st Republic Day, the Congress on Sunday sent a copy of the Constitution to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and took a dig at him saying, "when you get time off from dividing the country, please do read it".
The opposition party posted several tweets on its official Twitter handle, alleging that the government was subverting the Constitution
The Congress also tweeted the videos of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, former party chief Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reading the Preamble from a protest assembly at Rajghat recently.
"Dear PM, The Constitution is reaching you soon. When you get time off from dividing the country, please do read it. Regards, Congress," the party tweeted along with the snapshot of an amazon receipt which stated that the copy of the Constitution was being dispatched to the Central Secretariat.
In another tweet, the Congress said a lesson the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has failed to understand is that all persons no matter creed, caste or gender are guaranteed equality before the law under Article 14 of the Constitution.
"It is this article that is completely violated by the government's Citizenship Amendment Act," the party said.
"It is important to remember that it is enshrined in our Constitution that all persons are protected from discrimination of any form. Therefore, any attempt to draft laws based on discrimination are unconstitutional," it said.
Both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi extended their greetings to the people on the occasion of the Republic Day.
In a message on the eve of the Republic Day, Sonia Gandhi urged people on Saturday to rise above personal prejudices and stand united to protect the Constitution and its values, claiming that they are being attacked through a "deep-rooted" conspiracy.
"A deep-rooted conspiracy has been hatched to set a discourse to divide countrymen based on religion, regionalism and language as also to subvert and undermine the Constitution. An unprecedented atmosphere of disturbance, fear and insecurity has been foisted upon the country.
"The common citizen is convinced that the constitutional values are no longer safe in the hands of the present dispensation," she had said..
NRC online data go missing, authorities say cloud storage period expired

GUWAHATI: The online data of Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) showing details of included and excluded persons have suddenly disappeared from the NRC official website. The details were made available in the website in October last year on an order of the Supreme Court.
Assam leader of opposition Debabrata Saikia on Tuesday sent a letter to Registrar General and Census Commissioner informing about the “mystery” of the “online data vanishing all of a sudden.”,
“The data have vanished especially when appeals process has not even started due to the go-slow attitude adopted by the NRC Authority. There is, therefore, ample scope to suspect that the disappearance of online data is a mala fide act and is prima facie a deliberate violation of the directive issued by the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” Saikia wrote in his letter the registrar general.
An official source at the NRC office said, “The data were stored in cloud storage. But, the service period of the cloud storage provided by WIPRO expired and the subscription renewal was not done as there was no coordinator after the transfer of the former coordinator Prateek Hajela. After the new coordinator has assumed charge, the renewal process is underway and the data should be online in new few days.
CAA not against Muslims, says Rajinikanth

CHENNAI: Actor Rajinikanth on Wednesday said the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is not against Muslims. If any Muslim is affected he will lead the protests, he said.
"CAA is not against Muslims. Muslims will not be affected. If it affects them, I will come out and lead the protests," Rajinikanth told reporters outside his Poes Garden residence in Chennai.
"Muslims cannot be sent away. Those Muslims, who wanted to go to Pakistan during partition, had left. Those, who believed this is their motherland, stayed back," Rajinikanth said. There is an attempt by some to create confusion, he added.
"Some political parties are misleading people about CAA. Students should not allow themselves to be misguided by parties. They should fully understand an issue, before jumping into protests," he said.
Rajinikanth said NPR is "essential" to check the presence of foreigners. "It was an exercise undertaken by the Congress in 2011, it was done in 2015 and also now. But, NRC has not yet been implemented. Only discussion is on," he said.
As for Sri Lankan refugees, Rajinikanth said, they should be given dual citizenship. "All the Sri Lankan refugees staying in Tamil Nadu should be provided with dual citizenship," he said.
Rajinikanth also said that he is an honest tax payer and has not indulged in any illegal trade practice. He was responding to a question regarding his submission to Income Tax authorities that he had lent money to a few people for interest.
The actor said, he has not yet received any summons to appear before a Commission inquiring into the firing against Sterlite protestors in Tuticorin in 2018.
Those who raise anti-national slogans will be sent to jail: Amit Shah
BHOPAL: Those who raise slogans against India will be sent behind bars, BJP president and Union home minister Amit Shah said at a rally in Jabalpur on Sunday, his first since CAA came into force. A ‘sky-high’ Ram Mandir will be built in Ayodhya in just four months, he announced.
“Some students raised anti-India slogans, ‘Bharat tere tukde honge ek hazar, Inshallah Inshallah’ at JNU. Shouldn’t they be put in jail? Those who would raise anti-national slogans will be sent behind bars,” said Shah at the CAA outreach rally.
The BJP chief challenged Congress to stop construction of Ram temple. “Should Ram temple be constructed or not? Congress leader and advocate Kapil Sibal said it should not be built. Sibal bhai, stop it if you can. A sky-high Ram temple is going to come up within the next four months.”
Shah challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to point out a single provision in CAA that can take away any Indian’s citizenship.
“Congress and opposition parties are misleading the nation on CAA and instigating minorities,” he alleged, adding: “After Independence, Congress divided the country on the basis of religion. Hindus, Sikhs, Parsis and Jains, who lived in both East and West Pakistan wanted to return, but they stayed because of the bloodshed. The leaders of our country had assured them that they will be welcomed here and given the citizenship whenever they want.”
Justifying CAA, Shah said, “After Partition, there were 30% Hindus in both East and West Pakistan. Today, there are just 3% Hindus in Pakistan and 7% Hindus in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). I want to ask the blind and deaf Congress leaders, where have the Hindus, Sikh, Sindhi brothers gone? Where have Machhua (fishermen) of Bangladesh vanished?”
“Mahatma Gandhi had said, they were citizens of India and would be welcomed here when they want to return. The then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had also promised to give them Indian citizenship, but Congress is running away from the promise. We will do everything for them. Those who were being tormented will be rehabilitated here. Congress should open its ears and listen. Do whatever you can. We will give citizenship to all of them,” Shah emphasised.
The home minister also raised the issue of human rights violations in Pakistan and said, “Atrocities are being committed in Pakistan on minorities. Gurudwara Nanakana Sahib was attacked and the daughter of the Granthi kidnapped. What is happening there? Why is Congress not raising this matter?”
Shah also quoted the election manifesto of Rajasthan Congress, which promises to provide citizenship to Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan. “Now, Congress is refusing. The party is misleading the public. I would like to assure that there is no provision of taking back citizenship of any Indian citizen,” he said.
Accusing Congress of propagating lies, Shah said: “We will tell the public how Mamata Banerjee, Kejriwal and Rahul Baba are spreading false information. We will contact more than 3 crore people under the awareness drive. BJP has committed to finish some tasks since 1950. Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has completed those tasks.”
Congress opposes every move taken by the BJP-led NDA government, he said. “Congress is opposing every decision, from Article 370, 35A, to Ram temple, triple talaq, surgical strike, air strike, and now citizenship law. For vote bank politics, Congress is singing the tune of Pakistan and Imran on every issue. I urge Congress to return from the wrong path. It should understand the feelings of the public else, you (Congress) will be completely wiped out,” said Shah.
The BJP president also hit out at Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath for refusing to implement CAA. “Nath should not talk loud. Instead, he should focus on MP. The state has already been handed over to liquor and sand mafia. We are searching for gaushalas that Congress had promised in MP but couldn’t see a single one. Farmers who have been cheat

Test Result of First Indian Coronavirus Case Comes out Negative
The latest test result of the woman medical student, who arrived here from China's Wuhan region and was the first positive case from India for the novel Coronavirus (nCoV), has come out negative, health officials said on Monday, 10 February.

Her condition was "stable", they said.
According to the state health department as of now, 34 people are in isolation wards across various hospitals in the state.
"The blood test result of the first patient from Thrissur, from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) testing centre at Alappuzha, shows a negative result,” he added
"But we need confirmation from the NIV at Pune," a senior medical officer told PTI.

After the first positive case was reported from Thrissur, two other Keralite students from Wuhan, the epicentre of the virus, had tested positive in Alappuzha and Kasaragod districts.

The health department had earlier said those in isolation wards of various hospitals in the state have come down to 34.

“A total of 3,252 are still under observation across the state, of which 3,218 are under home quarantine,” a release issued by the health department said.
The department has already sent at least 345 samples for testing at the NIV at Pune and so far 326 results have returned negative.

The 'state calamity' alert, which was declared on 3 February, was withdrawn on Friday after no new positive cases of infection were detected.

Deepika Padukone To Be Awarded By The World Economic Forum, For Spreading Mental Health Awareness
Deepika Padukone, China's popular media personality Jin Xing and two other artists have been selected for Crystal Award by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The award celebrates the achievements of artists and cultural figures whose leadership inspires inclusive and sustainable change.

Chicago-based artist Theaster Gates and Australian artist Lynette Wallworth are the two other recipients selected for the award. Padukone would be given the award for her leadership in raising mental health awareness, the WEF said in a release on Friday.
'These wonderful cultural leaders are bridge-builders. They connect us to each other, they help us reflect on the human condition and they provide visions of the world that can cut through the limitations of short-term or linear thinking,' Hilde Schwab, chairwoman and co-founder of the World Arts Forum, which hosts the awards, said.
The release said Padukone is an internationally acclaimed actor, fashion icon and mental health ambassador from India. 'Padukone was diagnosed with clinical depression in 2014 and sought professional help to aid her recovery. In June 2015, she founded The Live Love Laugh Foundation (TLLLF) to give hope to every person experiencing stress, anxiety and depression,' it noted.

She has acted in close to 30 feature films. According to the release, the foundation's programmes and initiatives include nationwide public awareness and destigmatization campaigns, funding support for treatment in rural communities, training general physicians in common mental health disorders, research and an annual lecture series featuring the world's foremost thinkers and achievers.

Padukone said that with more than 300 million people suffering from the illness, depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability in the world today and a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease. 'It is therefore increasingly clear that now more than ever before, we need to aggressively address what is an invisible and overlooked health and social burden,' the actor said.

The winners would be honoured during the opening session of the WEF Annual Meeting 2020 at Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, on January 20, 2020. Sir David Attenborough, Margaret Atwood, Sir Elton John and Shah Rukh Khan are among the previous recipients of Crystal Award.

0-1 down in ODI series: Can India make familiar comeback vs New Zealand in Auckland?

HIGHLIGHTS
India have never won an ODI series in New Zealand after losing the opener
India were beaten in the 1st ODI despite posting 347 on the board
Pressure on Virat Kohli, KL Rahul to go big in the absence of Rohit Sharma
After the historic 5-0 whitewash in the T20I series, India were looking set to continue their dominance over New Zealand in the 3-match ODI series. It looked like New Zealand were deflated after finishing on the wrong side of close encounters in T20Is but they came back strong with a stunning win in the ODI series opener on Wednesday.

New Zealand were without captain Kane Williamson, their trio of premier fast bowlers in Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry but that did not stop them from sealing the 1st ODI in Hamilton.

Despite missing Rohit Sharma to an injury, India posted 347 in 50 overs after being sent in to bat in the 1st ODI. Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal, their two debutants, impressed and Shreyas Iyer stepped up with his maiden ODI hundred. Virat Kohli chipped in with a fifty before KL Rahul went berserk in the end overs. The Indian innings followed a familiar script. New Zealand's did not.

Led by a solid hundred from senior campaigner Ross Taylor, New Zealand gunned down the total with relative ease. Tom Latham's stunning cameo made sure the hosts did not choke like they did so many times in the T20I series.

For the 1st time in the series, the pressure is on India now. There is not much time to make a comeback in a 3-match series and New Zealand will be keen on continuing the good work when they meet in the 2nd ODI on Saturday in Auckland.
However, India have headed to New Zealand after having been in familiar situations in the recent past.

0-1 to 2-1 against West Indies

In a 3-match series against a spirited West Indies side last year, India were trailing 0-1 before they completed a comeback and took the series 2-1.

West Indies stunned India in Chennai on December 15 by gunning down a 288-run target with ease to go 1-0 up in the series. However, hundreds from Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul made sure India leveled the series in Vizag after posting 387.

India took the 3rd ODI and eventually the series with a 4-wicket win over West Indies in Cuttack last year.

0-1 to 2-1 against Australia this year

Only this year, India faced another situation where they were put under pressure by Australia. Aaron Finch's visiting team thrashed India in the series opener in Mumbai, gunning down a 256-run target without losing a wicket.

India bounced back yet again!

With the Big 3 -- Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan firing, India posted 340 in the 2nd ODI in Rajkot and sealed a 36-run win.

A Rohit Sharma hundred in the series decider in Bengaluru helped India take a hard-fought series 2-1.

Stat alert: India have never won an ODI series in New Zealand after losing the opener

India have been there and done that. However, the onus to get the big runs will be on Virat Kohli and KL Rahul in the absence of Rohit Sharma who has stepped up under pressure in the series against West Indies and Australia.

Moreover, history in New Zealand doesn't favour India as the visitors have never won a series wherein they have lost the opening match. India have managed 2 series wins in New Zealand (4-1 in 2019 and 3-1 in 2008-09) and on both those occasions, they began the series on a winning note.

This is the first time flyers went straight to the state’s nodal hospital from the airport. The three have been kept under observation in the isolation ward while their swab samples will be collected on Thursday, said a senior doctor at the hospital.

The Kolkata airport officials said the three did not test positive in the thermal screening at the immigration counter, but it is possible that they may have turned up at the hospital themselves after the airport authorities intensified campaign for home isolation from Wednesday for all passengers coming from China. The campaigns have been intensified following a TOI report on Wednesday, which highlighted that nearly 10,000 passengers were not personally advised home isolation by screeners at the airport as advised by medical protocol.
“We have put up fresh banners and posters at the screening zone, advising 14-day home isolation to the passengers coming from China. There are regular announce-ments on flights while the announcements on the airport’s display board advise people to maintain home isolation and visit the government hospital, if they develop the symptoms like flu, fever, cough and cold within 14 days of returning from China,” said a senior airport official.
The official added that the two passengers — a woman and a man and the airhostess — who visited Wuhan in the last fortnight went on their own to the hospital for screening as they might have been feeling unwell after coming out of the airport.
However, two other persons — a Bhubaneshwar resident, who had travelled with the Kochi woman on the same flight, and a Hooghly resident, who returned from China recently — have been discharged on Wednesday after their swab samples tested negative for the coronavirus, said Ashish Manna, MSVP, ID & BG Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Union health ministry has asked all states to keep 35 isolation beds ready. In Bengal, 25 such beds already exist at ID Hospital.
“So far we have enough number of beds in the ID Hospital. In addition, all medical colleges across the city have been asked to create isolation wards with five to six beds each,” said director of health services, Ajay Chakraborty.
